Background of the wind turbine blade industry

The modernization of the wind turbine industry can be traced back to the early 1900's. The earliest wind turbines powered water pumps rather than generating electricity, and as mankind's demand for electricity increased, research was conducted into the use of wind power to generate electricity, and by the early 1900's wind power had become the new renewable energy of choice. Over the past few decades, as technology developed and market demand increased, the size of wind turbine blades continued to grow, from tens of meters to more than 100 meters, as larger blades can capture more wind energy, thus increasing the efficiency and capacity of power generation.

Challenges of Wind Power Blade Transportation

The increasing size of wind turbine blades brings more challenges. In terms of transportation, wind resource-rich areas are relatively remote, with poor road conditions, and the blades may be irreversibly damaged by bumps on the road during transportation, which requires planning the optimal transportation routes to minimize damage to the blades due to poor road conditions or improper protection during transportation. However, how to assess whether the transportation of wind turbine blades is safe and feasible? How to evaluate whether the blades are safe and usable after they arrive at the destination?

Leaf Transportation Monitoring Points

  • Temperature and Humidity: During transportation, high temperatures or excessive humidity may cause damage to the blade material, so the temperature and humidity of the blade need to be monitored.
  • Vibratory shock monitoring: During leaf transportation, the bottom and tip of the blade are subject to different vibratory shock intensities. Especially for the transportation of longer blades, it is necessary to carry out impact monitoring at three locations of the blades. As shown in the figure on the left, they are: (1) near the maximum chord line of the blade; (2) the tip of the blade; and (3) in the middle of position 1 and position 2.
  • Threshold Setting: Different threshold conditions can be set for the transported goods and their sensitivity to shocks and vibrations for targeted monitoring. For wind turbine blades, which are highly sensitive, a lower threshold, e.g. 2g, can be set to monitor the impacts and vibrations at a lower level. The detection frequency is adjustable from 25 Hz to 1,600 Hz and can be set to 400 Hz to meet land transportation monitoring requirements.
