【Application Case】AR admission, innovative surgery! VUZIX AR glasses help the first total knee replacement surgery in the United States!

VUZIX, the world's leading AR eyewear technology company, validates the superior performance of NextAR Shoulder augmented reality surgical application on VUZIX AR eyewear in order to enhance precision treatment in orthopedic surgery.

The NextAR Shoulder is an augmented reality surgical application designed by Medacta to provide accurate navigation for scapular component replacement surgery. the successful validation of the VUZIX AR eyewear demonstrates the NextAR Shoulder's innovative power to enhance surgical precision and usher in a new era of orthopedic surgery.

VUZIX AR eyewear plays a key role in enhancing the surgeon's experience during surgery, enabling seamless integration of the NextAR Shoulder. The validation results not only confirm the high level of accuracy of the NextAR Shoulder, but also provide surgeons with real-time augmented reality navigation for more precise scapular component replacement surgery.

“The NextAR Shoulder not only provides a higher level of accuracy, but integrates seamlessly with the surgical procedures I apply. With NextAR and the VUZIX AR glasses, I feel more comfortable throughout the entire surgical process, from pre-op to intra-op to post-op.”

Dr. Matthias Zumstein, Orthopaedic Specialist, Switzerland

Recently published findings, "Scapular Component Placement in Inverse Shoulder Component Replacement Assisted by Head-Mounted Display-Assisted Augmented Reality Leads to Low Deviation Between Planned and Postoperative Parameters" (Rojas et al., Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, 2023), demonstrated a significant improvement in surgical outcomes, accuracy, and a high degree of concordance between the postoperative data and preoperative plan in areas such as inclination (1.0°±0.7 There was a high degree of consistency between the postoperative data and the preoperative plan in terms of inclination (1.0°±0.7°), retroversion (1.8°±1.3°), entry point (1.1±0.4 mm), and depth (0.7±0.6 mm). In addition, the differences in angular measurements (0.6°±0.4°) and distance measurements (0.6±0.5 mm) were smaller compared to intraoperative guidance.

The results of this study show that augmented reality intraoperative navigation with VUZIX AR lenses is expected to improve surgical accuracy and help surgeons achieve greater inclination and retroversion precision when implanting scapular components.

Prior to surgery, the surgeon uses a 3D virtual model of the patient's shoulder to select the optimal implant and reconstruction position via the NextAR Shoulder. Combining the VUZIX AR glasses not only optimizes pre-operative strategic planning, but also enables real-time tracking of instrument and implant positions through the proprietary, disposable NextAR TS tracking system.

The NextAR Shoulder is part of Medacta's NextAR augmented reality surgical platform, designed for joint replacement and spine surgery. The platform offers hardware systems with limited capital investment, low single-use instrument costs, and software that accommodates multiple applications. It aligns with Medacta's commitment to healthcare sustainability and is a key component of the MySolutions Personalized Ecosystem, which is designed to improve patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency.

Supported by Medacta's M.O.R.E. Academy, NextAR Shoulder users have access to ongoing customized support within a robust educational network to ensure surgeons integrate this innovative technology smoothly.
