Industrial Protocol Conversion] Packaging Machinery Connected to Good Network Communication Protocols

I. Case background

ÖsterbergsFörpackningsmaskinerAB is a Swedish machine manufacturer whose main business is the design of packaging machinery. Their machines are used to package food and prepare it for transportation to millions of Scandinavians every day.

Österberg's packaging machines usually do not handle the packaging of the actual food product itself, but rather the packaging required for transportation. These machines fold and glue the packaging cardboard and insert it into milk crates, boxes, packages or whatever needs to be wrapped before transportation.

As with all advanced machines, there is a great deal of network communication - both within the machine and with other internal and external systems.

II. Solutions

Realization of communication within the machine

Österberg opted for a very effective communication solution - the Anybus Communicator, which allows devices to be connected to any PLC system via serial or CAN communication. the Communicator enables different parts of the machine to communicate.

“We may replace the control system several times during the development phase, but still keep the validated and tested machine components (e.g. conveyor belts, sensors, HMIs, etc.). This is very important for spare parts management, which is vital for us and our customers. “

No hardware or software changes are required for the connected devices, as all protocol conversions are made from within Anybus Communicator.

(Ethernet/IP).

1. Modification of existing equipment

With Anybus Communicator, you can connect it to any fieldbus or industrial Ethernet network and avoid unnecessary investments by extending the life of well-running serial or CAN-based devices.

2. Avoiding Hardware and Software Changes

Anybus Communicator connects to machine devices without hardware or software changes to the connected devices. All data/protocol conversions are realized and mapped from within Anybus Communicator to the network.

3. Easily convert machine device protocols to serial/CAN protocols.

Anybus Communicator's flexibility means that it can convert almost any RS-232/422/485 request/response or production/consumption protocol - Modbus RTU, ASCII, DF1, CAN-based protocols or user-specified protocols. Communicator does not require PLC function modules or programming. The Communicator does not require a PLC function module and does not need to be programmed. It is simply connected, configured and ready to go.

4. Affordable Internet Connection

By using only 1 Anybus Communicator, it is possible to connect up to 31 nodes/devices in a multi-site scenario by selecting RS-485, realizing an effective fieldbus/Ethernet connection at a cost-effective price.

5. Connect slow serial devices without affecting performance

Anybus Communicator stores and intelligently maps I/O data internally. This decouples the upper fieldbus/Ethernet network from the slower serial/CAN subnet, meaning that devices with slower serial communications can be integrated into the high-speed fieldbus/Ethernet network without any limitations on upper network performance.

6. Simplify network architecture

As an alternative to "rack mounting", the Anybus Communicator can be mounted on DIN rails near the connected equipment, freeing up space for PLC racks and cabling.
