Croatia.Split University<\/strong>Ranked high in the national rankings and a member of the European University Association, the School of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding is one of the largest components of the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FESB Racing<\/strong>A student project at the university, the team consists of 43 young engineers dedicated to building the best racing cars and motorcycles. Since its inception in 2010, the team has competed in 12 races, successfully designed and built three formula race cars and four motorcycles, and they plan to launch the first all-electric formula race car in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Racing is a data-driven sport, with many teams focusing on analyzing data and putting in the smallest details to get ahead.<\/strong>Kvaser sponsored two products for the FESB team:Kvaser Air Bridge<\/a>\u8207 Kvaser U100<\/a>These two products help them to collect data from test components and further analyze changes in racing performance after setting adjustments, as well as tracking every millisecond of racing conditions during laps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upgraded data acquisition technology to unlock the performance potential of racing cars<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The FESB team had been using CAN interfaces for communication between the ECUs of the race cars, but hadn't analyzed the potential for exploring the performance of the cars in depth. In order to upgrade the data acquisition technology, Team FESB decided to use the Kvaser Air Bridge wireless CAN adapter and the Kvaser U100 CAN-to-USB interface, which enables real-time acquisition and collection of dynamic data for real-time transmission to the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a software package provided by Kvaser to interface with its CAN devices, the FESB fleet developed a C# desktop application to track vehicle data in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith the app, we can lock in each test run and then reconstruct what happened every second on the lap track. Not only can we use the device tool to collect data, but we can also use it to send data to the race car. This is done using the PCP protocol. This allows us to quickly update the software and calibrate parameters such as ECU throttle run times in a timely manner.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although CAN buses are widely used in the automotive field, in complex application scenarios, such as race tracks where test data needs to be frequently confirmed, the small space inside the race car is not conducive for engineers to collect and analyze data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using the Kvaser Air Bridge, the FESB team is able to obtain accurate and reliable data in real time without being in the car, so as to analyze and adjust the performance of the vehicle in real time.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Team FESB is currently building Formula Student and MotoStudent cars and will be competing in the 2023 MotoStudent race in Spain and several Formula Student races in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
